About the Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos Tickets

The Denver Broncos have long been synonymous not just with the city in which they play but its high elevation, too. From the first days of the franchise in 1960 up until 2000, the Broncos played at Mile High Stadium – making it clear that the team is (literally?) on top of the world. Even today, the team’s current stadium still includes the nod to their hometown and high-flying spirit.

Starting out as Lovable Losers

The Broncos endured plenty of dark days early in their tenure – they posted a 39-97-4 record in their first decade as a franchise. During that time, the Broncos were close to disappearing, until a group of local investors took ownership of the team and began the long journey toward success.

Eventually, things improved for the Broncos with their vicious Orange Crush Defense in the 1970s and the arrival of quarterback John Elway in the 1980s. Even then, though, the team was so close but so far away when it came to success on the gridiron. The franchise lost its first four Super Bowls, including three in a four-year span from 1986 to 1989, even with the legendary Elway leading the way.

Finding the Long-Awaited Title

It wasn’t until the end of Elway’s career that the Broncos finally reached a breakthrough, winning back-to-back Super Bowl trophies in the late ‘90s. For their first title, the Broncos were double-digit underdogs against the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII but pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.

Later, Elway returned to the team as the General Manager and slowly rebuilt the Broncos. He convinced fellow legend Peyton Manning to spend the final years of his career in Denver while simultaneously building a historically good defense that culminated in a win in Super Bowl 50, the third title in franchise history.

A Lineage of Rivals

In their six decades of being an NFL franchise, the Broncos have carried on rivalries with an almost endless number of teams. They’ve had non-stop rivalries with division opponents like the Chiefs, Raiders, and Chargers. At various times, they’ve also had bitter conflicts with teams like the Browns, Steelers, and Patriots for AFC supremacy. With such a long list of enemies, it makes every game the Broncos play at Mile High a special occasion.
